Wood burners for Alnwick homes, town and country
Alnwick and the countryside around it are made for a real fire. Many homes are solid stone, a good number sit off the mains gas network, and the wind off the North Sea can be sharp. A stove makes a lot of sense here. We are a small team of HETAS-registered installers based in Newcastle, and we travel up the A1 to Alnwick and the surrounding villages with no travel charge on standard installations.
We are installers only, without a showroom, which helps us keep prices fair. You can buy your stove through us or have us fit one you already own. We start with photos and a survey, then send a written fixed price, so you know exactly where you stand. Not sure what heat output you need for a big stone-walled room? Our guide on sizing a stove for your room explains the basics.
Our services
Stove services in Alnwick
Every Alnwick installation covers the following from start to finish.
Stove supply and fit
We supply and fit Ecodesign wood burners and multifuel stoves, or install a stove you have chosen, suited to thick-walled stone rooms and modern living spaces alike.
Chimney lining
Older Alnwick chimneys are often wide, uneven stone flues. A stainless steel liner, insulated where needed, gives the stove a safe, consistent draw.
Twin-wall flue systems
Barn conversions, extensions and newer homes on the edge of town often have no chimney. A twin-wall flue offers a neat route through the wall or roof.
Hearths and register plates
We fit compliant hearths and register plates, taking care with original stone fireplaces in older buildings.
Sweeping and smoke tests
We sweep and smoke test every chimney before fitting, so any problems are found before the stove goes in.
Certification
We fit a carbon monoxide alarm and self-certify the job through HETAS, so you receive a Building Regulations certificate.
Homes in Alnwick
Historic stone buildings and rural properties
The centre of Alnwick is a conservation area full of Georgian and older stone buildings, many of them listed, set around the Market Place, Bondgate and Narrowgate. Beyond the centre there are Victorian terraces, interwar and post-war housing, and newer estates on the edges of town. Out in the countryside you will find farmhouses, estate cottages and converted steadings, while coastal villages such as Alnmouth face salt air and strong winds, much like the homes we cover further up the coast in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
For listed homes, a new flue or visible change may need consent, so we raise this at the survey stage. Our stove advice and FAQs cover more of the practical questions.
- Listed stone town houses in the conservation area
- Farmhouses and cottages off the gas network
- Barn conversions needing a twin-wall flue
- Coastal homes exposed to wind and weather
Before we quote, we check your address with Northumberland County Council for any smoke control rules and flag where listed building consent may be needed.
Local history
A short history of Alnwick
Alnwick's story is closely tied to its castle. A first timber castle was founded by Ivo de Vesci in about 1096, and the Percy family acquired it in 1309. Today it is the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor. Between 1854 and 1865 the 4th Duke of Northumberland paid the architect Anthony Salvin to remodel it in a more medieval style, and in more recent times it appeared as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films.
Being so close to the Scottish border brought conflict. Malcolm III of Scotland was killed at the first Battle of Alnwick in 1093, and William the Lion was captured at the second in 1174. Bondgate Tower, named after Sir Henry Percy, known as Harry Hotspur, is the only surviving upstanding part of the medieval town wall. Nearby, Hulne Priory was founded for the Carmelites in about 1240.
The railway station closed in 1968 and is now Barter Books, a large second-hand bookshop. The Alnwick Garden, created by Jane Percy, Duchess of Northumberland, opened its first phase in 2001.

Stove questions from Alnwick homeowners
Questions Alnwick customers often ask before booking.
Do you really travel from Newcastle to Alnwick?
Yes. Alnwick is part of our North East area and there is no travel charge on standard installations. For very remote rural addresses, any charge is explained in the quote.
Is Alnwick covered by smoke control rules?
Parts of Northumberland may be, so we check your exact address with Northumberland County Council before quoting. Even outside smoke control, an Ecodesign stove burns cleaner and uses less fuel.
Can you fit a stove in a listed building in the town centre?
Often, yes, but consent may be needed for a new flue or changes to the fireplace. We advise checking with the council first and plan the installation to suit the building.
Our farmhouse is off the gas network. Is a multifuel stove a good idea?
It can be, as it lets you burn wood or approved smokeless fuels. We help you choose a stove sized for the space and the way you live.
How quickly can you survey a property near Alnwick?
Usually within days. Sending photos first lets us give you an early idea of the work involved.
Ready for a warmer home?
Tell us about your room and your chimney. Photos help. We will reply with a clear, fixed-price quote and no obligation.
