Wood burners fitted across Darlington

From Victorian streets near the town centre to family homes in Mowden and Hummersknott, Darlington has plenty of chimneys that were built for open fires and suit a modern stove well. We travel down from Newcastle to work across the town and the villages around it, with no travel charge on standard installations.

We keep things simple: a look at your photos, a survey, then a written fixed price with nothing added later. We are installers only, so there is no showroom cost built into the price. If you are still deciding on output, our guide to choosing the right stove size for a room is a good place to start.

Our services

Stove services in Darlington

Everything needed for a safe, signed-off installation in a Darlington home.

  • Stove supply and fit

We supply a stove suited to your room and budget, or fit one you have already bought, in anything from a bay-fronted terrace to a 1930s semi.

  • Chimney lining

Many older Darlington chimneys have tired brick flues. A stainless steel liner, insulated where needed, gives smoke a clean and safe route out.

  • Twin-wall flues

Newer homes on the town's modern estates often have no chimney, so we design and fit a twin-wall flue instead.

  • Hearths and register plates

A compliant hearth protects your floor, and a register plate closes off the chimney above the stove for a tidy, safe finish.

  • Sweeping and smoke tests

Before any stove goes in, we sweep the chimney and carry out a smoke test to check it is sound.

  • Certification and CO alarm

You get a carbon monoxide alarm and a Building Regulations certificate, self-certified through HETAS, when we hand over.

Homes in Darlington

Victorian terraces, interwar semis and village cottages

Darlington grew quickly with the railways, and streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces still ring the town centre, many with a chimney breast in every room. Further out you find interwar semis, larger villas in the west end and plenty of post-war and modern housing. Each type has its own quirks, from shared stacks to narrow flues.

In villages such as Hurworth, Heighington and Middleton One Row there are older brick and stone cottages that often need a liner and careful hearth work. Read our guide on whether you need a chimney liner if you are unsure, and if you live out towards Teesdale, see our page for stove fitting in Barnard Castle.

  • Terraces where neighbouring flues share a stack
  • Interwar semis with original fireplaces opened up
  • Village cottages needing liners and new hearths
  • Modern homes suited to twin-wall flues

Parts of Darlington may be covered by smoke control orders, so we confirm your address with Darlington Borough Council before we quote.

Local history

A short history of Darlington

Darlington began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement beside the River Skerne and grew into a busy market town. Its oldest major building, St Cuthbert's Church, dates from the late 12th century and is Grade I listed, regarded as one of the most important Early English churches in the north of England.

The town's great claim to fame came on 27 September 1825, when the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened. Promoted by the Darlington Quaker Edward Pease and engineered by George Stephenson, it was the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives, with Locomotion No. 1 hauling the opening train from Shildon through Darlington towards Stockton.

Railway engineering shaped the town for over a century, and the North Road works built locomotives from 1863 until 1966. Quaker families such as the Peases and Backhouses left their mark too; Joseph Pease gave the town its clock tower in 1864. The story is told today at Hopetown Darlington beside North Road station, and the railway's bicentenary was celebrated in 2025.

Stove questions from Darlington homeowners

Answers to questions we hear from Darlington householders.

Do you charge for travelling to Darlington?

No. Darlington is within our standard North East area, so there is no travel charge on a normal installation. Your written quote shows the full price.

Can a stove go into the original fireplace of a Victorian terrace?

Usually, yes. We check the chimney's condition and size, sweep and smoke test it, and in most terraces fit a liner so the stove draws well and neighbouring flues are not affected.

Do I need to worry about smoke control in Darlington?

Possibly. Parts of the borough may be covered, so we check your address with Darlington Borough Council and recommend a suitable exempt stove and fuel if needed.

My new-build house has no chimney. What are my options?

A twin-wall flue system can run inside the house or up an outside wall. We show you the possible routes at survey and include the flue in the fixed price.

How quickly can you come out to survey?

Surveys usually happen within days. Send a couple of photos first if you like, or call 07404 544 688 to book.
