Local stove installers

A short trip over the river to you

Gateshead is one of the quickest places for us to reach from our home area of Newcastle, whether you live near the quayside or out towards Ryton and Rowlands Gill. There is no travel charge on standard installations, and we are happy to look at photos of your fireplace before we visit. If you have a fireplace you never use, a stove can bring it back to life and give you something cleaner and more efficient than an open fire.

We keep things simple. One small team surveys the chimney, explains what is needed and puts it all in a written quote with no surprises later. If you are not sure whether your flue is up to the job, our guide on whether you need a chimney liner is a good place to start, and you can always send us your details for a free quote.

Homes in Gateshead

From Tyneside flats to Low Fell semis

Gateshead has a real mix of homes. Around Bensham and Saltwell there are streets of Tyneside flats, where each flat usually has its own flue within a shared stack. Low Fell and parts of Whickham have roomy Victorian and Edwardian houses with tall chimneys, while Felling, Wrekenton and Leam Lane have plenty of post-war semis.

Out west, places like Ryton, Crawcrook and Rowlands Gill include older stone houses and cottages, some on exposed ground where a good liner and the right cowl make a big difference to how well the stove draws. On newer estates, where houses were built without chimneys, a neat twin-wall flue is usually the answer.

  • Tyneside flats: we confirm which flue is yours before quoting
  • Edwardian houses often have generous fireplace openings
  • Post-war semis may have narrow or blocked flues
  • Stone cottages out west can need an insulated liner

Parts of Gateshead may fall within smoke control areas, so we check your address with Gateshead Council and suggest a suitable exempt stove before we quote.

Local history

A short history of Gateshead

Gateshead has a long history on the south bank of the Tyne. The Venerable Bede wrote of an abbot of Gateshead named Utta, showing there was a monastery here in Anglo-Saxon times. Much of the old riverside town was lost in October 1854, when a huge explosion and fire on the quayside destroyed most of Gateshead's medieval buildings and spread across the river to Newcastle.

Industry shaped the Victorian town. The Hawks, Crawshay and Sons ironworks was one of the largest employers until it closed in 1889. In 1876 Saltwell Towers and its grounds were sold to the town to become a public park, now Saltwell Park. When unemployment hit hard in the 1930s, the Team Valley Trading Estate was built to bring new jobs.

Modern Gateshead is known for its landmarks. Antony Gormley's Angel of the North was installed in February 1998 on the site of former colliery pithead baths. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge followed in 2001, and the music venue now called The Glasshouse opened on the quayside in December 2004.

Stove questions from Gateshead homeowners

Some of the things Gateshead customers ask before booking.

Do you charge extra to travel to Gateshead?

No. Gateshead is right next to our Newcastle base, and standard installations here have no travel charge.

Is my home in a Gateshead smoke control area?

Parts of the borough may be covered. We check your address with Gateshead Council and, if needed, recommend a Defra-exempt stove and the correct fuel.

Can you fit a stove in a Bensham or Saltwell flat?

Often we can. We identify your own flue in the shared stack, check its condition and line it if needed, all before giving you a fixed price.

I live out near Ryton. Is that too far?

Not at all. Ryton, Crawcrook and the Derwent valley villages are all within our normal area.

How quickly can you come and look?

We can usually survey within days. Photos of your fireplace and the outside of the chimney help us prepare.

Ready for a warmer home?

Tell us about your room and your chimney. Photos help. We will reply with a clear, fixed-price quote and no obligation.
