Careful stove fitting for coastal homes

Tynemouth homes face the full force of the North Sea, and many of them are old, handsome and worth treating with care. We travel out to the coast from our Newcastle base and take our time over each survey, looking at the stack, the flue and the fireplace before we suggest anything.

We are HETAS-registered installers with no showroom, so you deal directly with the fitters. Your written quote covers every part of the job, and our guide to how much a stove installation costs will give you a feel for budgets before we visit. With older chimneys, it is also worth reading about when a chimney liner is needed.

Our services

Stove services in Tynemouth

The same thorough steps for every Tynemouth home, from a Front Street terrace to a seafront flat.

  • Stove supply and fit

We supply wood burners and multifuel stoves that suit period rooms, or fit a stove you have already chosen.

  • Chimney lining

Tall, exposed coastal stacks often need a stainless steel liner, insulated where it helps the flue warm up and draw.

  • Twin-wall flue systems

Where there is no chimney, such as a rear extension, we can route a twin-wall flue neatly and safely.

  • Hearths and register plates

We fit hearths and register plates that respect original fireplaces and meet the regulations.

  • Sweeping and smoke tests

Every chimney is swept and smoke tested first, which matters in older houses with shared or altered flues.

  • Certification

We fit a carbon monoxide alarm and provide a HETAS Building Regulations certificate at handover.

Homes in Tynemouth

Georgian terraces, Victorian villas and sea air

The heart of Tynemouth is a conservation area, with Georgian and Victorian terraces along Front Street and grand Victorian houses facing the sea. Many still have their original fireplaces and tall chimney stacks. Some larger houses have been split into flats, so we take extra care identifying which flue serves which room.

Salt spray and strong onshore winds are hard on chimneys. Pointing, flashing and chimney pots wear faster here than inland, and downdraught on windy days is common without the right cowl. Further back from the front, Prior's Park and the streets towards Preston have more 20th-century semis and family houses. The coastal conditions are the same a few miles north, where we also fit wood burners in Whitley Bay.

  • Conservation area rules can affect visible flues
  • Coastal stacks often need repointing or new flashing
  • Converted flats need careful flue tracing
  • Insulated liners help cold, tall flues draw

Parts of Tynemouth may be covered by smoke control orders, so we check your address with North Tyneside Council and advise on an exempt stove before we quote.

Local history

A short history of Tynemouth

Tynemouth's story begins on the headland above the river mouth. A monastery was built there in the 7th century and later fortified. It became the burial place of kings, including Oswin of Deira in 651 and Osred II of Northumbria in 792, and Malcolm III of Scotland was buried there for a time after his death in 1093. A castle was added around 1095, and the ruins of the priory and castle still stand on the cliff today.

Sea bathing became fashionable in the late 18th century, and Tynemouth grew into a popular resort. The railway station opened in 1882 to handle the crowds of holidaymakers. Tynemouth Pier took from 1854 to 1895 to build, and was rebuilt after storm damage, reopening in 1909.

Overlooking the river stands the Collingwood Monument, finished in 1845. Designed by John Dobson with a statue by John Graham Lough, it honours Admiral Lord Collingwood, who led the British fleet into action at Trafalgar as Nelson's second in command.

Stove questions from Tynemouth homeowners

What Tynemouth homeowners often want to know.

Can I have a stove in the Tynemouth conservation area?

Usually. A stove fitted inside an existing chimney rarely changes the outside of the house, but external flues or changes to the stack may need permission. We will tell you what to check with North Tyneside Council.

Does Tynemouth have smoke control areas?

Parts of the area may be covered. We check your address with North Tyneside Council and recommend an exempt appliance and suitable fuel if needed.

Will the sea wind cause problems with my stove?

Strong onshore wind can cause downdraught. A properly sized liner and the right cowl usually solve it, and we assess this at the survey.

Do you charge to travel to the coast?

No. Tynemouth is within our standard area, so there is no travel charge on normal installations.

How soon can you come out?

Surveys are usually within days. Photos of the fireplace and chimney stack help us plan the visit.

Ready for a warmer home?

Tell us about your room and your chimney. Photos help. We will reply with a clear, fixed-price quote and no obligation.
